Making Progress: Spare Room

In the last few days, our guest room/office has been transformed from a junk room to an actual office space and then a guest room. Granted we only moved this quickly because we will be picking up our guest tomorrow afternoon.

I still have some finishing items to pick up tonight, so you will have to keep waiting for the final changes.

(I can't wait to have a real spare bedroom where we can have an actual bed and frame for guests rather than are amazing air mattress...it is amazing...its just an air mattress though.)

Actor Replacements: Switching for the new year

I admit that I have liked Chris Evans but not the movies he acts in.
(Is he or is he not a looker?)

I also admit that I have been watching Supernatural off and on for some time now. Its a show that I will leave on while I am making dinner in the other room so I haven't been able to delve into the characters yet. But, I did think that the main character was being played by Chris Evans.... Well surprise, surprise! Dean Winchester is played by Jensen Ackles! So happy am I to find a new replacement for Chris Evans!

Tell me they don't look somewhat alike?

Office/Guest Room Re-do

This procrastinator has a mother-in-law coming next week to stay with us and I need to feel like the guest room is presentable. Every time we've had guests stay in our office I feel this huge guilt trip before they arrive that it is more of a junk room/office than an office/guest room. Over time, I have pulled out some ideas from my sleeve but never acted on them (note the procrastinator bit).

So I am going to work my butt off to try and make this room more comfortable for our guest's three week long stay. Granted I will be working around some MAJOR issues:

Issue #1: The space is a rental so as much as I would love to shell out my own money to make the space my dream room, I refrain from changing pricey fixes.

Issue #2: Previous tenants painted the walls a dark orange

Issue #3: These walls are paired with our pistachio green desk (see the DIY of this desk here)

Issue #4: There is a non-working fireplace at the end of the room and two windows that are off centered on the opposite side of the room

Issue #5: We "invested" in a queen sized air mattress in college and would like to feel like it is still worth the investment (so for now, no buying a queen sized bed to wedge into the office)

All of this of course on a super small budget.

To begin, I have been gathering up room and color inspirations to help me figure out what I can do with minor changes in the space.

I'll keep you updated on this project....

Copy Cat Bargain: Entertainment/Media Center

I recently spotted this entertainment center set-up in the new West Elm catalog and fell in love!!! I would love to convince the hubby to let me buy it (to replace the two stereo speakers we have lying on their sides and our fancy tv sitting on top), but it is a little pricey. To get the set shown would cost you about $1,097!

Flowers for my Hair: A treat from small girls

After spending part of my holiday with some of my nieces, I have come to the conclusion that large flower hairpins look good on more than just sweet little girls. A clip or two were put in my hair by the girls to keep my "hair out of my face". It really did wonders for my mangy traveling 'do so now I am in the works of getting some flower clips of my own.

Just spotted Tamara Kaye-Honey's amazing interiors on Design*Sponge. I'm hooked and in love with her style.

I am going to keep this image in my reference book for when I finally own a home and look to repaint the house.

I'm so happy our fireplace grill is already black...now on to the finishing touches like shown above.

The random ram under the desk is my favorite! It reminds me of my random three sheep heads in the kitchen. The hubby still is unsure of their purpose in our home's styling :)

I can't stop dreaming of fall and colorful leaves, sweaters, stockings, scarves and boots. I'm going into denial from being so far away from cold weather for so long. I can't wait to start layering my clothes everyday and dragging down my winter clothes from the attic. In the meantime, I am making list after list of fall items I am missing from my wardrobe that I deem I "must" get.

Yes. This blows my mind, but it also makes a complete circle in my mind. Technology has been a huge advancement in being able to market and advertise products/services. Upside: Companies have direct access to their specific demographics (no more wasted $ and time advertising to people who don't fall into your customer demos). Downside: As a consumer my privacy feels invaded knowing that I will get plastered with offers from companies based on products I've purchased or services I've used (I fear the day when I will start receiving those cheesy "old-people" catalogs that include butt-donuts, oversized magnifying glasses and shoes that resemble puffy slippers- just because I got online to see where I can purchase adult diapers cheaper than my local grocery store) :)

Birthday Binder: what amazing gifting skills you have!

I have seen similar ideas for keeping track of birthdays and other special occasions. The crew at Martha Stewart has turned this idea into a binder to hold birthday cards with reminder sheets for the birth dates so they are sent out on time.

I wonder if I could add idea for birthday presents? I always think of fun gifts to give people when that special day is many months away, but when the date is looming near I can't remember my brilliant gift ideas. Perhaps a binder like this could be a reminder spot for me.

My Daily Day: Keeping the Fruits Happy

Hubby is sick today. We think he got it from a co-worker. I'm trying to keep him eating healthy foods, fruits and veggies. I made oatmeal this morning with apple juice (an Oprah mention) and added some frozen blueberries and toasted almonds.

I'm also working at spicing up fruits that can seem mundane and boring. I sliced up a honeydew melon for an afternoon snack and remembered a dressing we used to make for honeydew when I worked at the dude ranch. We made a honey poppyseed dressing so I recreated my own from memory. The poppyseed really dresses up the presentation of the fruit, while the honey keeps the fruit sweet tasting. Give it a try. Tell me if you like it.

I would love to have an entire library of bare-boned hardback books with their sleeves removed. I love the texture and look of book covers by themselves. I don't know how I missed this (actually its probably because I have been neglecting my flickr account for some time now) but one of my summer skirts was featured on the amazing Grosgrain! You can see it here.

I received many comments on the skirt and people have asked what pattern I used, if any. I did use a pattern from Simplicity's New Look line, which I used for two other skirts as well. This skirt got a personal twist on the pattern since I wanted to add the wide yellow band at the bottom of the hem.

Late Night Goodies: Weddings throw in a Hankie

Yes, it is almost midnight and I am still up....I am home alone so I have the authority to do what I want- including staying up past my bedtime. Besides, this wedding gift idea was worth it to stay up late.

The fabulous brunettes over at Two Brunettes have stunned me with this great gift idea! These unique hankies have been bundled up in plastic packaging to give as gifts to the bride's lovely ladies, including mom and aunties. And they will all be glad to have their sweet gift when their gal ties the knot and they gush with happiness! Brilliants gifts are the best!

Brain Smart: Saving PSD transparency for Illustrator

Ba-da-ba! I have found an answer to my LONG term question of how to keep the transparency of a Photoshop image when exported to an Illustrator file! Well, technically there are a few different ways to solve this dilemma. Some techies suggest you use the pen tool to trace your object, but this is SO time consuming! I want to be able to use my magic wand tool to erase all the background and save it as a transparent background. And now I know how!

Step-by-Step:

1. Open your image up in Photoshop.

2. Unlock the image by double-clicking on the lock icon next to the image layer.

2. Select the background or any other part of the image you don't want showing in Illustrator and delete (I literally hit the "delete" key for this action).

3. Go to the "Help" menu at the top of Photoshop and select "Export Transparent Image".

4. In the pop-up window, select the first option, "My image is on a transparent background".

5. Choose whether you plan to use the image for printing purposed or online.

6. I want to use my image for online, so I then choose the format I want it saved as. GIF or PNG.

7. Then rename the image (unless you want it to use the auto-save name) and hit "Save"

And Ta-Da! You now have the image saved with a transparent background. Easy-peasy.

I have been saving this image for some time now, after I spotted the white coffee table. We have been moving around with a very large wooden coffee table that I was handed down by my mother. I have considered throwing it out several times, but the hubby loves it. So I have finally began to start the process of painting this table white! I will post on my process and the turnout soon.

I love this red room- though I don't think I will ever allow my craving to get this satisfaction (I know if I allowed myself to paint a room red, I would start painting many other rooms red too). Shopping in Malaysia: Peter Hoe

I had read some amazing reviews on the Peter Hoe stores in Kuala Lumpur and had hoped to be able to stop by one of the two stores during our trip.

I was so excited to stumble upon the store!

During our monorail trip to visit Central Market and Chinatown we spotted Peter Hoe's Evolution store down the street. We immediately fell in love and purchased many items. As we were checking out the clerk told us their large store, Peter Hoe Beyond, was just down the street as well! I LOVE these stores and I hope you'll shop there if you ever get to visit Kuala Lumpur. I do wish they had an online shop :(

Pampering and Nail Polish

I used up my relaxation time during our vacation by getting pampered at the hotel. I had my first Thai massage and I'm still unsure if I would try it again. My body is still aching three days later.
I also got a pedicure to prep up my sandal feet. I love the OPI nail polish used at salons and I found that OPI has partnered up with Sephora to sell some great nail polish colors. They've come up with some great names for the polish colors, like "Meramaid to Order", "Meet for Drinks", " What's a Tire Jack", and "I'm With Brad". That is a job I want- naming nail polishes!

I'm back from Malaysia! I never realized how much I would miss sleeping in my own soft bed (we slept on a bed that was literally like sleeping on a 2x4). I'll post some photos from the trip shortly.

The hubby and I spent our first anniversary in the air, flying from Taipei to Kuala Lumpur. Because of the time change I'm not sure how many hours Sunday actually lasted for us and I mostly remember sleeping.

We've been so busy with business meetings and luncheons since we got here that the two of us have had very little time together so far, but I received the greatest surprise gift yesterday from the hubby!

He's been waiting months to give me this book. Yes, the book I have been waiting years to locate!

Swimsuit Find: Coverage and cost

So I compared prices (including fast shipping) for the swimsuits I was looking at online and wasn't very pleased. Victoria's definitely has the best prices and I even found additional coupon codes online. However, I decided that as gorgeous as some of the swimsuits I previously chose were, I need a swimsuit that I can wear to everyday events (like BBQs) as well as exotic vacations (like our trip to Malaysia).

I also added into my choosing factors that I wanted a wide waistband (so not to accentuate my larger thighs) and a top that I would feel comfortable getting thrown around in the ocean and then popping up to the surface (i.e. no boobs plopping out for all to see).
I spent the bulk of Sunday afternoon visiting every shop I knew carried swimsuits. Finally, we drove far enough to reach the Target where I found two outstanding swimsuits that covered my list of qualities above.

1. Mossimo Black Mix-and-Match Bikini (the suit I purchased is actually a dark wine color but I couldn't find an image of it online)

This morning I met with a client and I was more than happy to meet at a local coffee shop so I could satisfy my craving for an iced chai latte. I like my ice crushed up so its like drinking up a chai milkshake....yum!

I also had to stop by the photo booth to get my passport photos taken today. I wish I would have put more thought into my look this morning. I am of course not happy with the way the photo turned out.

This bird mobile was the featured project today from Martha Stewart's Craft of the Day. These birds reminded me of the origami hummingbirds I was folding this weekend. Right now, I am dreaming of an ice bath.... Once again our air conditioning broke down yesterday and I don't know if I can handle the heat- or the sweat. I set up three fans in my bedroom last night and I still slept restlessly. The A/C company has finally arrived and this time they sent in the boss man.
